Codemasters Announces Race Driver One
[20-04-2007 | JZ | Comments (10) ]
Codemasters today announced Race Driver One , the third generation in its acclaimed 8-million+ selling motorsport series. The title is now in development at Codemasters Studios, creators of genre-leading motorsport video games, and will arrive in 2008 for leading console platforms and PC.

Race Driver One will be a true evolution for the series, which first appeared as the TOCA (DTM/V8) Touring Car games (19972000) and became the TOCA (DTM/V8) Race Driver series (2002-2006). Taking the series from ultimate racing simulation to ultimate racing stimulation, Race Driver One will be the next technical showcase for Neon, the studio's proprietary middleware system that is already driving Colin McRae: DIRT in incredible detail.

Challenging players to become the number one race driver in a new world of exhilarating motorsport, Race Driver One will take players on a tour like never before; to beautifully realised racing locations through Europe, the U.S., Japan and beyond. The game will feature the most extensive range of events in the series, combining official circuit-based championships with road races and urban street competitions.

"As each generation of gaming formats shifts up a gear, so does this series and Race Driver One is set to evolve the previously headlined TOCA (DTM/V8) titles as much as DIRT has the Colin McRae series," says Gavin Raeburn, Executive Producer at Codemasters Studios.

"Combining our racing heritage with the Neon engine, Race Driver One will create a world that goes far beyond the traditional boundaries of motorsport gaming, taking players from the most prestigious race circuits to road and street events around the globe. A completely fresh career structure will engage players in an unprecedented range of racing styles as they build a team capable of becoming number one. The Neon engine will be expanded to deliver a new level of visual detail, physics and an astonishing car damage system."

Race Driver 3 BTCC Mod v2.2
[10-10-2006 | JZ | Comments (0) ]
The latest version of my BTCC mod is now ready for downloading. (File-size 11.5mb)

What's new in the version 2.2 mod?

Version 2.2 has all the original features of the previous mods, plus quite a few extras and updates.

It features all 23 drivers who have raced so far in this year's championship. Also vehicle sponsor graphics have been updated as well as a few tweaks here-and there to the car physics and in-game menus etc.

Also, in addition to the normal BTCC season, there is now an extra 'Bonus' championship which can be accessed through the 'Simulations' menu. The 'BTCC International Tour' will allow you to race the cars on an extra 15 international circuits, including Bathurst, Spa, Indianapolis, Shanghai etc., ... and, just for fun, a Karting track and Dirt track.

If you play ToCA Race Driver 3, dont expect to purchase any other racers in the near future. Codemasters have really hit their mark in this release, with the insane numbers of licensed cars and tracks, highly realistic simulation that includes plenty of damage variables, all spread across over 30 different styles of racing.

According to Dictionary.com, ultimate is defined (in part more on that later) as representing or exhibiting the greatest possible development or sophistication, so when Codemasters assails the gaming public with an assertion that they have created the Ultimate Racing Simulator, they are making a heady claim indeed.

Perhaps one of the most interesting sports for the strangest of reasons, racing has a strange habit of causing many, many people to enthusiastically go around in circles, ovals, and many other shapes with the promise of fame, glory, and the occasional prize in the bag. Moreover, it also has this curious habit of many-a-person coming along to watch these tireless individuals go round and round, until somebody wins.

With Race Driver 3, Codemasters have managed to put a lot of content into this latest iteration of their Race Driver Series. With a wealth of cars, tracks and racing series represented on the DVD, and the addition of some much wanted features such as functional rearview mirrors, the ability to adjust race-length, the number of practice laps, and in some instances the duration of practice and qualifying sessions, the scene should be set for some serious motoring fun.

Most game publishers will tell you its difficult or next to impossible to create a single title that can appeal to and satisfy both casual and serious racing game enthusiasts. Then again, most game publishers arent Codemasterscreators of the award-winning Colin McRae Rally and ToCA Racing games. With over 70 licensed cars representing almost every motor sports discipline and over 80 tracks to race them on, can ToCA Race Driver 3 offer a compelling racing experience accessible to novice and pro racing gamers alike? Racing is one of the most popular genres of gaming. Gems such as Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec and Gran Turismo 4 never make it to the PC, though the Need for Speed series has been good about blessing us PC gamers. However, two distinct sub-genres exist within racing games. There are the arcade play games, and then there are the realistic racers. The later is under represented on PC gaming, but the ToCA Race Driver series is aimed at that niche of the market. We'll soon find out how well ToCA fills that spot.

Driving Simulation is about the cars and the tracks, whats under the hood and where to race. Now you can race in almost any race type on over 80 tracks around the world with over 70 licensed cars, and I dont mean licensed for street driving. Codemasters has released their third racing sim and they have done a fantastic job. TOCA Race Driver 3: The Ultimate Racing Simulator is not just a few racing types on many racetracks. Its all the major racing types from around the world with some extras thrown in for more fun.

Every type of race is enjoyable to be a part of thanks to a real sense of speed and weight behind most of the vehicles. You'll notice the difference most notably in the handling, learning to judge how a truck handles differently to a rally car (especially if you skip from one to the next in competition) is essential on your path to career success. In addition, keeping you on your toes are a set of AI controlled competitors that definitely aren't soft, in fact they're pretty ruthless from the off. If you lose your line on a corner they'll think nothing of clipping you as they pass, sending you skidding off the track and knocking you from first to last position before you can say, 'excuse me, Sir! That's not very sportsmanlike conduct now, is it?' In normal mode there's a chance for you to catch up if you mess up early on, but in hard mode you can kiss goodbye to pole position.

Codemasters certainly isn't afraid to go head-to-head with the big boys. The ToCA Race Driver series is now onto its third iteration and while the likes of Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport have been making all the headlines, ToCA has been gathering quite a fan base. Not content with the huge selection of vehicles and race types from Race Driver 2, The Race Driver team have gone to town with their latest game, creating one of the most complete racing packages ever to grace consoles and PC

TOCA 3 has some really excellent damage effects, specifically in regards to what damage does to your car, like when you go crashing into a wall at high speeds. For example, your transmission might get jacked up, causing you to shift gears at a slower, more erratic rate; your wheel alignment might go all higgledy-piggledy, forcing you to veer off to one direction or another if you don't hold the steering wheel tight; and your engine might just cut out altogether. Even simply driving onto the infield shows noticeable problems, as your tires start to cool down and collect all kinds of gunk. The visual representations of this damage vary in quality. Open-wheel racers tend to show the physical damage to the car better than most other cars, but if you wreck hard enough, you'll see some nice-looking damage to just about any vehicle

TOCA Race Driver 3 proves that there is a third way. It sits in a racing genre that has effectively split into two splinter groups. On one side there's the deathly-serious simulation, where everything has to be gleaming and mistakes are routinely punished, yet for the dedicated player there's one hell of a challenge. Sneering at them from the other side of the room are the arcade-focused racers, the Burnouts and Need For Speeds of this world, whose ethos insists on fun above everything else.
TOCA Race Driver 3, wisely at it turns out, sits in the middle
