Colin McRae Rally 4 Official Patch v. 1.01 [16-06-2004 | JZ | Comments (6) ]
The first patch for Colin McRae Rally 04, updating the all-wheel drive racing sim to version 1.01. Here's word on what the update features: "Improved the ghost car tracking system, to improve the visibility over LAN/Internet. Controller calibration is now smoother and less hard to control. The gear box testing sections are now better balanced. The game now report the ready state correctly in LAN/Internet multiplayer modes. Added code to display name, damage, tracks, etc when using GameSpy Arcade.

Colin McRae Rally 04 Review at GameSpot [22-05-2004 | JZ | Comments (5) ]
Colin McRae 04 features support for all manner of controller types you could possibly want to use, be it a keyboard, an analog controller, or a driving wheel. The keyboard controls are probably the most unwieldy of the bunch, simply because the cars are so touchy when it comes to handling corners. Analog and driving-wheel controllers are probably your best bet, since we had the least-harrowing experiences trying to control our cars with these types of controllers.

Colin McRae Rally 04 Review at GameGuru [03-05-2004 | JZ | Comments (0) ]
Multiplayer is where the game really kicks in for the replay department. You can play head to head or co-operatively through LAN/Internet. Everything is there to make you and your friends holler with the pure thrill of becoming the best Rally racer in the room. That's why I gave CMR4 a bit higher score than CMR3 (75%), despite the fact CMR4 feels more like CMR3 expansion.

Colin McRae Rally 4 Review at Real Gamer [22-04-2004 | JZ | Comments (0) ]
There are no real major advancements in Colin McRae 04 although there are lots of subtle differences that make the games driving experience slightly more compelling to that found in the excellent CMR3. The most notable difference is the way the cars handle, corners are executed in a much more realistic fashion as cars tend to slide through them more, just like rally cars do in the real world.

Colin McRae Rally 4 2004 WRC Mod [17-04-2004 | JZ | Comments (0) ]
Glen Wimberley has just released a WRC mod to cover all the new WRC car textures as well as some menu and other misc. changes. It's also only 8.42 MB so it's a nice small download and there should be no troubles with the server that it's hosted on. Email or drop your comments to the developer on the download page.

Colin McRae Rally 4 Using Old Tracks [13-04-2004 | JZ | Comments (8) ]
I guess Codemasters is getting lazy. Colin McRae Rally 4 uses tracks from all previous titles. What they changed is the textures and trackside objects. Do you think that is fair? Check the thread for pictures.

Colin McRae Rally 4 2003-2004 Mod [13-04-2004 | JZ | Comments (3) ]
Official cars: Peugeot 206 03-04 (Gronholm/Rautianen), Focus 03-04 (Martin/Park), Lancer 03-04 (Panizzi), Impreza 03-04 (Solberg/Mills), Xara 03-04 (Loeb/Elena). Real driver names, new icons, menus, movies, etc. Music is still under construction. This file is 113MB big and it is not hosted on our server. So if the speed is slow, don't complain.

Colin McRae Rally 04 Preview at Action Trip [11-04-2004 | JZ | Comments (5) ]
Still, I was a bit disheartened for having to endure some of the mishaps of the CMR 3 engine code. For example, running into a small shrub on the road causes the car to stop short, despite the insanely high speed. In addition to the pretty poor backdrop textures, Colin McRae Rally 04 is still crammed with outdated 2D sprites in the backdrop - rally fans watching by the road look like paper dolls, and the same effect carries true for the trees.

Colin McRae Rally 4 Review at GD [10-04-2004 | JZ | Comments (0) ]
Controls are a bit limited as wellour steering wheel worked great, but our Act Labs stickshift and gas/clutch/brake set didntwe found ourselves jonesin when we had to shove our pedals and stickshift back under the desk with a deep sigh while we raced. It just seemed sowrong. We felt the influence of the Xbox in the limited amount of control options available to us, as wellshift up, shift down, accelerate, brake, steering, and camera angles were pretty much it.

Colin McRae Rally 04 Review at CG [09-04-2004 | JZ | Comments (0) ]
The real problem today is what limit intends the producer to set when simulating reality? Where does one get the ideal balance between fiction and reality in order to deliver a very enjoyable gameplay? What's funny is that a 100% simulator would be a total failure and not because there wouldn't be people out there willing to pay for it, but because not everyone has the skills and the patience characteristic to rally pilots. This is how I come to ask again: how much reality do we need in a game like Colin McRae?
