(This thread is just for reviews of the game. Please no other posts except reviews. Thanks.) Impreza_wrcsti
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all,
We (me and my pal who is the Driver in the rallyteam I'm co-driving next season, who has little SIM experience compared to me btw ) tested the console version today.
First impression:
WOW, this is not a game!
It's unbelievebly hard to master, and that will be the reason a lot of reviewers will give it a bad rating, especially when you compare it to anything else on the market. If the damage was setup just as realistic as the driving, power, braking, etc. than it would be virtually impossible to finish a stage.
After calming down a bit , we did some serious driving tests and reviewed the replays.
Gameplay:
Excellent - A lot of people will have to get used to the fact that full throttle, full brakes or anything else abrupt on the controller will cause a certain crash.
So the advice is:
Steer gently and smooth. Apply throttle and brake very balanced (just like a real rallycar). There's a very steep learning curve in this SIM, but for me it's the challenge I'm looking for.
Everything on the car reacts as it should. I hope we get some adjusting options to the handbrake in the PC version, because it's a bit hard to get the right feel when to apply the handbrake sometimes.
Great stages, very well done! And don't be afraid of them being too short because halfway you are really looking forward to the finish!
Graphics:
Great and very well done. Not to shiney, no arcade candy colors.
Great 3d modelling all over, very detailled.
Sound:
The sound is good overall,
Offcourse the sound has to be split up in pacenotes, engine and effects.
Pacenotes:
well done!
Engine:
Always hard to judge, it sounds realistic but IMO the feedback factor in a PC simulator is more important then the actual sound you get,
the feedback is good.
in a real rallycar the enginesound is more muffled by the helmet.
Because of the high frequency the sound of the whining gearing and some turbo effects are much more present.
Effects:
A lot of Effects we hear in a simulator are important to give extra feedback. In that department the sounds are ok and pretty realistic IMO (the watersplash sounds a bit odd though),
A rallycar makes all kinds of sounds, it's a loud mixture of bodysounds, suspension etc, etc.
In real live a lot of these sounds are'nt even noticed during a stage, apart from crashing sounds offcourse.
Conclusion:
I really can't wait for the PC version because I'm very sure this SIM will come to it's full glory with a good FFB wheel and pedals.
I'm a little scared that people who are used to games like CMR and so on, will play it once and then throw it in the wastebin (to bad for them, but also bad for selling figures).
When this comes to the PC I'll be first in line to buy it!
The GPL of rallySims! For the developers I hope it will not turn out to be the GPL of rallySims when it comes to selling figures.

Having been playing this game for a few hours now i'm am so pleased to say that its the best rally game i've ever played by far The stages are so good compared to wrc and mcrae so much detail and thought has been put into them.
The car and handling is superb, not easy at first but far better than the pick up and play of the other titles but i can see it getting sick from non rally fans who just want a thrash around and wont appreciate thats its a sim!
this game is just what i expected and much more, well done

German review. 9/10!

Indeed, the reviewer really enjoys the game. The only big minus he says is the German localization, as the German Co-Driver is talking "nonsense": there are too many mistakes and irritations, for example "easy" is translated to "flach" which means "flat" in Germany, so that the only choice to have a "reasonable Co-Driver" is to switch over to English. Were there no German speaking beta testers? Is it possible to fix the problem for the pc version? Usually UbiSoft is doing superb Geman localizations, so I think this one is not coming from them. I did localize other pc titles, so if any official would like me to check the pc translations feel free to send me a note.

UbiSoft is SCi's distribution partner in Germany:

As I said, UbiSoft's localizations usually belong to the finest ones in Germany (for example the fabulous one for Morrowind), so I do not think they did the one for RBR and probably rather received a distribution master from SCi. It would be good if the German localization that is included here could be revised in time for the pc release, as customers here usually are even more demanding. Even though many people will play the game in English anyway, as this will be the most authentic version, most Germans would love to see and use a fine German localization - done or at least supported by somebody who understands Rally driving.

From BHMS RBR Interview:
Quote: |
If you start a stage as one of the first cars, the stage will be pretty pristine. Starting last will have the road softened up and lined with your competitors' tyre marks |
.
Any comments on this from those who has the game?

There are tyre marks at least in Japan.

I am pretty sure, that the track is showing the course most driven on.
I think in one of the GB stages, i started last, the track had a good "ideal line" on it, and was pretty dark, where i thought, most other drivers used to drive, and on the other places, the track was lighter (it was a rainy stage, so it looked correct, muddy where all drove, normal gravel, where no one - except me - drove)
So it think this feature is in the game.
Damn, i got to get one of these wheels as quickly as possible, unable to drive good lines with the dual shock, especially with the steering - too sensitive, because of to less movement. |

Wow ! What a treat RBR is. I was tempted to call it a "game" which it surely is NOT.
I've been running the XBOX version through my PC ALL weekend and taken several hours to full get the feel of the car using the fantastic MadCatz MC2 steering wheel, which for those that don't know, ALSO can be used on the PS2 and Gamecube.
Anyone expecting a CMR clone will be surely disappointed.
RBR is as close to the real thing as we are EVER gonna get. The programmers have obviously spent ages on this, down to EVERY small detail.
I've played them all over the years BUT NOTHING comes close to this.
It is VERY important to run through the Rally Driving school because Richard will explain ALL the things and tips we need to know in order to control and drive a Rally Car.
I am also a little concerned that the younger drivers out there will "miss the point" and give up too early, especially if they are trying to use a Pad, which I think is impossible in this sim if not for one reason only. That being, things happen so fast that drivers need their feet to take away a task for the fingers. IT IS A MUST THAT THIS SIM IS DRIVEN WITH 2 FEET ON THE PEDALS AT ALL TIMES. Richard explains that "left foot braking" is a VERY important part of driving a rally car and "boy ! does it show in practice.
The first time I ran a full rally, CMR style, I came last..literally in every stage.
Second time, using left foot braking almost constantly to get the car under control, I trashed the living daylights out of all the competition and won with ease.
Its hard to fully explain how "dead correct" this sim is until:
1. You drive real cars every day.
2. Until you've sat down, gone through the Rally School, listened to EVERY SINGLE WORD that Richard sais and ACTED UPON IT.
I can't really say anymore than that. Its "shit hot" on. Congrats to all involved for a fantastic job, VERY well done. I ASK ONLY ONE THING.
HURRY UP AND RELEASE THE PC VERSION PLEASE.[/b] |
