Simply amazing stuff, Piddy.
And that you plan not only to support trees but also other stuff (like traffic signs, perhaps even rocks and visitors) might become the icing on the cake.
You are the champion!

Piddy, when you choose an area size to plant trees while dragging the mouse, maybe it would be nice to see some kind of circle showing exactly the size of space you choose on the terrain. Then, there will be an option where you can definite this size, so the circle mouse icon change in real time depending which size you choose. Or just by dragging the mouse over terrain the circle size would change also. Speaking about terrain, i've started a track, and when you made terrain, it shows for example terrain area1, terrain area2, etc... but, when you want to continue with same terrain, it just create a new one. It would be nice if you can just select terrain area1 before creating nodes, so you can continue with it. Other issue is when a vertex is created independently, it can't be merged to the track. Here is other suggestions :
Possibility to raise terrain from a multiple vertex selection. Not just one by one. Raise terrain also by edge and polygons.
When you select multiple vertex for moving terrain, if you click a second time on the same vertex after it has been selected, it deselect.
Undo : when you make errors, just click undo instead of saving each time you create something new.
Drive and Fly over : It would be nice if when you unclick theses buttons, the 3d view just return where it was before, so you can continue working ...
ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT NEXT BASIC TOOL BTB NEEDS (sorry for the caps)
Paint/mapping tool : A tool for painting textures ... you can choose brush size, then freely paint wherever you want on terrain or by creating a frame on a vertex in a panel where it delimit boundary you set so, your texture will match according with terrain until this treshold, so when you pass this boundary, texture regenerate. In other words, when you paint, the end of texture before automatically regenerating it would be delimited by the limit boundary you have predefined in the panel. Good example : In 3dsmax UVW Unwrap tool, when you click edit UVW, there is a panel that open. Just like this, you would have to preselect vertex, then draw the limit lines around this vertex, so the end of texture would match with the limit lines. Then, there would be an option on the panel to (most important) scale texture to fit with the vertex limit predefined, and also options to move texture and rotate by 90 degrees increment. Current tool is good for painting landscape, and with a paint tool, it would be a great alternative and compromise (to paint hills, crest, road sections, merge roads together, do small roads path in forests, etc.) because there is textures you can't done by moving the vertex. I think it's one of the most important next basic tool that BTB need.
They are only suggestions.
Long life to BTB !!!
