Dunno if you have tried or mentioned project torque. It is fun and free to play. And, many of the old Motor City Online crowd are gathering there. So, look for Project Torque at www.aeriagames.com.
If you do decide to play, you will find that most items can be bought with credits earned for simply finishing races. The better you finish, the more points you get. The items you can earn include fantasy cars and individual upgrades to each car. To buy licensed cars, however, will require real money.
Note: this is the kind of game you can play for fifteen minutes or five hours at a time.
