Does anybody know if all the pda with gps out there can actually record the gps data?
I'm asking this because a friend of mine has a pda with gps, but he doesn't know if it is capable of this.
Is there any software (free would be better) that would do this?
I live in Greece, near the real WRC Rally Acropolis 2007 special stages so it's not a problem for me to go and record the special stages data.
But I should know first if this can be done...

The most important part of the GPS data is the Elevation, the actual stages can be drawn from maps with google maps ... https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/
any GPS unit with a barometric altimeter, gps data alone is not accurate enough for the elevation .. its Ok, but it will most likely be jittery data ... requiring lots of hand smoothing, of course, anything is better than nothing =)

actually the Greece elevation data looks pretty good from the pedometer output files, just needs a bit of the usual smoothing ..
the Thiva stage from last year has no clouds over it, been playing with this thing on that stage and so far its looking pretty good...
https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1032398 [last segment of the stage- this section was shown onboard if i recall correctly ..]

thanks for the reply.
About the pda, it has windows mobile so please suggest any software for data recording.
About the stages now, hopefully, the official rally acropolis site www.acropolisrally.gr has already google maps to download and the stages are 100 % visible.
I 'll try also with the pedometer site and see what I can do...

Hi,
I just saw Bob's Track builder and when I discovered you can import Google GPS data I got all excited. Next weekend is the Ypres Westhoek Rally, mainly tarmac and you wonna know what??? All stages are on there page with google gps data...
So please someone make some stages for RBR from the Belgian Ypres Westhoek Rally!!!
I would prefer Heuvelland which is the longest of the rally...
https://www.ypresrally.com/content/view/42/63/lang,en/
Or Zonnebeke which passes quite close to my parents home...
https://www.ypresrally.com/content/view/41/62/lang,en/
This is so cool!!!
(Do I have to make pictures or anything? )

Nederlandstalig.
Okay, I tried the editor, by importing the data files the Ypres rally site, succeded, but:
- the files on the Ypres site are kmz files, that means they are packed and needed to be unzipped. In the zip there is a .kml file, that is the one u need.
- the kml files have no info on the height of a certain point, so the stage is completely flat. A way to resolve this is to draw a very raw sketch of the stage in https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ and save it to .gpx. In that file the height is added. Then we need some sort of program that opens the kmz file (which has a quite big resolution - lot of points), finds for every point in that file the height of that point in the gpx file. This information should be saved to a CSV file. That CSV file could then be imported to have a nice stage with ups and downs...
I don't know if Bob reads this board, but it would be interesting to make a sweep over the enviroment of the stage in https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ , lets say 50 points spreaded over the area, save it to a file and use that file to make the landscape?

Or maybe I should just buy a GPS and drive the stages with my own car. Save the data to a CSV and load it up in the editor. Does somebody have an idea what GPS you need to have a quite accurate result?

if you are using the pedometer, whatever you do DON't do a 'quick raw sketch'
Every point you place is a node, if you don't put in enough nodes to describe the true shape of your road you will never get the important subtlies of the road .. ie tightens opens .. variations in the curve ...
see the thread elevation data for tracks for more about this ...
basicly you use topofusion to do your final .csv export thats what gets you the xyz data in meters [away from the datum ws84] ...
once you get that csv you still will have to do some smoothing on the elevation as its only 1m increments up and down...
you need a barometric altimeter, as you note, the xy part can be drawn from pedometer .. raw gps data usually needs to be tweaked a bit to get it on the road and make sure thers no weirdness going on..

Oh yea, heres a smoothed out version of Thiva .. this road needs terrain and pacenotes in a bad way =) But its drivable now at least got rid of Most of the overly sharp anomalies
btb project file, so tweak your road shape in btb to you liking and export...

your close to the right idea[that works for now] - true terrain will have to wait till we can maybe use heghtmaps or dem files for the surrounding area [I suppose you could do that now but its lotsa 3ds max work ..]
what you do is click points along a ridgeline .. save .. click point on corresponding valleys .. save .. etc etc .. very very very time consuming and you have to use a common offset when bringing All your collected gps files together into the venue ..
heres some examples of what I am talking about using other tracks for terrain and using segments for intersections/useability [Roads are from the end of Thiva through the pedometer, and a test file of just randomness playing with possibilities], and a spreadsheet for smoothing your elevation [tweak the filter for your number of points .. its designed for the point density of the USA rally GPS data]:
