I was having a rant in my head about what a rally sim co-driver should be like and thought, "hey, why not rant about it to other people?!"
Rally sim developers are getting the message that co-drivers are an integral part of rallying, even if the FIA are not. So rally sims generally now have an improved co-driver with adjustable timing and sometimes multiple note systems. But what developments would you like to see? A perfect, smart AI co-driver.
Often there are certain corners which are noted badly or are difficult to note altogether! Everyone hears the notes differently so why not have everyone's co-driver tune their notes for a particular stage to the player? This would be a co-driver who learns by knowing how you handled the corner... the equivalent of when you slide wide and yell at the co-driver to change the note for next time. There could even be a button on the steering wheel to say "downgrade that last note".
Alternatively, if there's one corner you crash on frequently, the co-driver could learn to emphasise the note for that corner.
Emphasis in pacenotes is pretty important in rallying to grab the attention of the driver when there's a sharp turn after a series of fast ones or at the end of a long straight. Alas, emphasis is rarely used in rally games.
What do you think? And what features would your perfect rally sim co-driver have?
