What is it on the templates that determines whether a painted car will have a shiny finish or not? I downloaded the Blade NoShine template from here and was wondering what is different between this template and the others that give the shiny finish.

Heya Bill,
I'm very surprized how there is no help going on around these boards. So I figured I'd answer some of the more resent questions. And invite you all to come on over to www.flatoutjoint.com, as there are many very active racers and game modders.
So the answer to your question is the skins use an alpha layer to control the shine on the cars once in the game.
If you open your skin in photoshop or paintshop pro (You'll need the dds plugin) and click the "channels" tab down by the layers information (photoshop) you'll see alteast 4 to 5 layers.
You should see the following channels:
RGB
Red
Blue
Green
And if your skin has it a Alpha 1, channel.
It's that alpha 1 that controls the shine. Basicly it works like this, the darker the alpha layer the less shine. The lighter the alpha layer the more shine.
So I hope that gets you started in the correct direction. And if you have any further questions please come visit us at www.flatoutjoint.com
