I have 3DS max 7 and I would like to create my own car models for Flatout. I can't find any type of file in the data folder that would have the existing models for the game. Where are the car models? What type of file do they use? If anybody could tell me which file types I need to try and use and whatever else I may need to know, I would greatly appreciate it.

You need the free modeling programs ZModeler and ZModeler2. ZModeler can import car models from many games and ZModeler2 can import cars from some other games. ZM2 can also export to Flatout .bgm model format. The site also has a free example Flatout car in ZModeler2 format. However, to open up all of the original FLatout game cars, you need to pay about $40 to register ZM2.

Just to be clear, you can make your own Flatout cars for free or convert them from other games for free but if you want to make changes to the original Flatout cars that came with the game you have to register.

ZM2 can also import .3ds models. Once in a while the texture mapping can get messed up though. There is a thread on their forum about it.

To get a .3ds file into Flatout, you have to first import it into ZM1 and then save it as a .z3d file and then open up ZM2 and import the .z3d file. THen you are ready to make any changes to take car of any damage modeling and placeholder parts. Then you can export as a Flatout .bgm file.

There are guides out at places like https://vales.com/flatout/

Sorry but I'm going to start off all my reply's to help the same way. But it's sad no one has replied with help.

I'm very surprized how there is no help going on around these boards. So I figured I'd answer some of the more resent questions. And invite you all to come on over to www.flatoutjoint.com, as there are many very active racers and game modders.

Heya Prodigy,

Now you don't have to register zmod 2 (and pay the 40 bucks) to import 3ds models. Zmod2 has not filter to import 3ds files, so you have to use zmod1 (which is free) first.

Import your 3ds model into zmod1 then save it as a zmod file (z3d). Then you can import that z3d file from zmod1, into zmod2. And then once finished working on the car. You can export it to Flatout's bgm file format. A unregistered version of zmod2 can export with no problems.

So I hope that gets you started in the correct direction. And if you have any further questions please come visit us at www.flatoutjoint.com
