Since I noticed people talking about how the games released in the recent years are more or less remakes of some older titles, I wanted to shed some light on this issue. I'll start by telling you about a great game from the year 2000, by the name of Rally Championship. Sadly forgotten by many. Developed by Magnetic Fields, it was first published by Actualize in 1999 as simply Rally Championship; then Electronic Arts in December decided to release it in the next year's spring as its own product with a slight name change...

Hmmm, back then it was NASCAR 4 for me all the time ... this is not the same as "RalliSport Challenge" what I did found in the BHMS shop for 17.99$ (stupid question, but article says EA changed the name)?
Via german Amazon I found "Rally Championship 2000" for 5,99 new, 2,49 second-hand.
Is this what you would call a hard-core sim, like you wreck hard and you are out? As well as with those nice narrow tracks as seen in RBR?
If not I don't think I'd like it ...
Thanks

The Damage model is realistic, but a little forgiving, but past a certain damage %, you are diqualified. As for narrow tracks, it can't get better then this, some location are very very narrow. Some stage are still the longest ever seen on a rally sim, like 25 - 30 Km, some at night.... In North america, the game is called Mobil Rally Championship.
There is a appreciation thread running at https://bhms.racesimcentral.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=11083,
Here is two nice fan-site, it should be added to the link section
https://home.no.net/rally/ (Kwel download section)
https://www.activescore.com/rally/ (nice forum)
Quick fix:
1- For peps that have problem with 3-axis
add the following to ral.cfg:
joymode=3
joycode=0x02051000

The stages and overall design are excellent but the physics just don't feel right at all. Still I challenge any developer to make realistic long stages like the ones in RC2000. |

Agree with earlier comment that the physics are not the greatest, but OK for 1999/2000. But the stages are the greatest--because they are the real stages plain and simple. Don't waste time inventing crap fake short stages when you can just copy real stages--chosen by the rally entities because they are good (or the best available in that area/terrain).
I can only hope that RBR has editable stages and/or that new stages without any artifical length limit (as in below 60 km) can be created if fans put in the effort. The RBR stages I have seen still look too wide, but we'll see...

Physics in RC2000 is far from perfect, but still very good. What I like in this game is an atmosphere of rally championship, immersion in the rally world.
Replay system in RC2000 from my point of view is still the best replay system ever. It is actually movie factory inside the game.

This game was hard as hell (so then kweel !), and despite a "strange" feel to drive a "box on the road" (no real weight transfert, no suspensions feeling) it was very enjoyable with long (so long) stages, great graphics (still today) and one of the BEST force feedback implementation (still today) which could give a lot physics back to the driver. To say the least, it was the first driving experience where i was actually SCARY to drive fullspeed with the incredibly frightening speed feeling on these narrow roads (I'm hoping to find that back in RBR).
unfortunately, I never enjoyed the whole game because of some annoying CTD... maybe i should give it back a second chance, waiting for RBR god.... |

The physics in RC2000 were shockingly bad. Despite all the other fantastic elements- the stages, damage, etc - the game was, and still is, sickening to play because of the shuddering, sticky, unsophisticated physics.
A nostalgic, rose-tinted review should still mention this glaring fault. |
