With apologies to Warthog, it was crap. Short stages, wide roads, crap physics, a forgiving damage model, poor steering wheel support, weird graphics (not bad, just weird - like shiny chrome car surfaces) etc.

I agree. It was very strange game...

Completely different development team to the one working on RBR, or so I believe I've read.... One does get the strong feeling that they will have nothing in common apart from the warthog logo.

Warthog's space sims are awesome, so it's surprising RCE was so bad.

Am I the only one who has a contradicting opinion?
I think RCE is a decent attempt. Apart from the overly shiny -and otherwise ugly- cars I don't remember very serious problems with it. It has its weak points of course, and on the whole the contemporary CMR2 is a much better and complete GAME, but RCE has its strengths. The average stage length is 11 km, name ANY rally game apart from RC2000 that does better. It actually HAS UNDERSTEER, unlike any of the CMR titles (I haven't tried CMR4 so far as I am a PC gamer, but from what I heard...). FFB is not bad (once you realize you have to set the steering "speed" to the lowest available, otherwise its nigh undrivable Smile ), although a bit jerky, I never could make up my mind whether it had a bug or the jerks were actually something correct when one of the wheels left the ground. The stages are quite challenging, you are tossed around quite a lot while driving, have to take caution to stay on the road. I personally found the graphics quite good for its time...
...As I said it has its problems that make it inferior to CMR2, I just thought I'd give a short view on the positive side...

Downloading the demo now. Falcon77 - it's always good to hear a different view.....
How did the complete game compare to the demo?
Edit: Okay, tried the demo. It's....not great...but not terrible either. You're right about the understeer. Physics are a rather floaty and bouncy, but I can see this would be a fun arcade rallyer to kill time with. Man those tracks are wide (and long)...

Falcon77> What about steering sensitivity? I've tried to play the game using steering wheel and it seems so unresponsive. I have to make almost half turn to make car move left or right...

I have the demo, and find the game not bad. Very different in the way they designed the track. So open.

I like how the rocks fly up. Pretty sharp.

Smile, I loved this game, played it for almost a year online , not doing it 'sim style' but there is soo many shortcuts n stuff in that game, and just the speed of the game gives it a + for me, I would be happy with that game, but just some new tracks Smile
there is a lack of options for steering wheels, but just use your wheels software to deal with that
you can stop the car being shiny (and i think its just meant to be reflections from the sun, u'll notice it changes depending on what stage you are on) by turning the car env map off

The physics and input system were horrible.

The linearity and deadzone weren't adjustable. So basically you had a huge deadzone and then all of the steering lock crammed into the rest of your controller movement. Which is fine on a gamepad-oriented arcade game, but just doesn't cut it in a sim. A sim requires the ability to have fully linear steering with no deadzone if it's going to be drivable.

Physics wise, you could hit a tree at 80km/hr and it would put a little dent on the car. The grip was so high you could climb vertical cliff faces. And the car seemed to have that self-centering force that's present in almost every rally game so that anyone who picks it up can execute scandinavian flicks with little effort.

Rather than harping on what's bad about RCE I'd rather focus on what's already improved in RBR. Smile Until a developer starts talking about the tire model in their sim I don't care much for anything else they have to say, but once they do they have my full attention. I think RBR is going to rock.

There is one feature in RCExtreme, which I like - editing pace notes... Smile

I think RCX has normal roads. The real "problem" is that car models should be at least 30% bigger. With current scale of the models the game looks like it's Radio Controlled Xtreme. IMHO
