Hi all,
I'd like to hear your ideas on this little theme and pick your minds.
Do you like MP in Rally games?
What exactly do you like when it comes to MP action?
Cars on track at same time, turn based rallying, run simultaneously with ghosts, or just solo car on screen?
Give me lots of info
Cheers

I think there should something like this: all people race one stage at the same time, but the server host chooses if they can collide with each other or not. |

I think these days, there is no reason why, all the above multiplayer options shouldn't be available in the game, the host and or racing league should be able to enable / disable these options, accordingly.

Two aspects of multi-player that gets overlooked is the interface, and no collide. I know the realism police will scream about no collide, but those same officers are the first ones to start whining about online collisions due to lag.
Interface:
It doesn't have to be pretty, but there is no reason it can't be. Very user and community friendly is what it needs to be.
You need a main chat room where everyone meets. From that main chat room you can make a race room. You should be able to see the names of the people in the race rooms. People in race rooms should have access to the main chat as well. Ideally you will also have a chat area for the race room so you can talk amongst each other about whatever.
This makes it easy to find friends and maintain interaction with everyone
In the race room the host can select all the race options, tracks or whatever and then launch the race. Ending a race brings you back so you can see whos arrived in the main chat room and pick up a friend, or leave that race room to go race with someone else you have seen. This is why it is important that everyone be able to talk to everyone whether they are in main, or a race room.
Just take a good look at the MS gaming Zone "interface". Why reinvent the wheel.. It works...
No Collide:
Sure rubbing paint is fun. But in an arena where a player cannot be penalized for ramming you on purpose or where our internet causes lag hits and warping you need a no collide option so us racers can get to the reason why we bought the game, RACING.
Other than that, taking more time to optimize net code so that it is more accurate at determining race position and time would help as well. |

I Think It Must Have A Online-Maultiplayer Option, Like By Toca Race Driver, But So That You Can TURN OFF THE COLLISION In Multiplayer Modus, Because On Many Servers Have You More Destruction Derby Like Racing.
I Like The Multiplayer Option From F1 Challenge 99-02. There You Have All Options In Multiplayer Modus Like In Real F1.; Trennig, Qualifi., Warm Up,Car Setup,... It's Pretty Funny. It Is Also Pretty Nice That You Have A Option For Many Online Players, Not Just For 4-Or That Something Like Now In Upcoming Nfs Underground.

Another question/problem.
As rally tracks arent designed for multiple cars, overtaking etc, would this be a feasible option in having multiple cars on the track at the same time? Could get very messy

Hello miker_CLO -Good morning/evening/afternoon whichever the case maybe.
Multiplayer - Only obvious 1 i can say is like echod above. Collision .
Try and give all options and cater for all, my 3 suggestions for you are as other games (not mentioend here).
Collision on (must)
Collision off (must)
Collision forward only (great options)
Apart from those, im sure the rest is allready fine. I hope to be on another "codemasters" game soon.
Bring back good ole Monty Mole wohoo my c64 give that some going i tell ya:)

Hiya Mike
This is an easy. In todays standard of games/sims, we should be able to have all options available on the host. For me, it should be turn based like a real rally is but thats because I want it realistic. Others may want more rally cross with all cars at the same time and others may just want ghost cars. You must also have the option for collisoon to be turned on or off.

I think turn based rally isn't feasible. If there was 20 racers in a game, playing on a very short track, that's 3 minutes per run, that's an hour to wait for each person. The only benifit is simulated track wear, such that RBR is promising, but with nice realisticly long tracks, which we all know we want, the wait between runs would just be ridiculous, even with just five people racing. I say ghost mode. Collisions just cause too many problems in a high latency environment, unless everyone is on uber connections. I've had problems over lans with collisions, I'm not game to try online racing with my dial-up. Sure, the more options the better, but not to the detriment of the experiance. |

Hi,
First of all try to write some decent (no-lag) multiplayer code... Toca Race Driver suffered from bad coding and therefore terrible lag (no, this was not caused by slow internet connections or something similar).
When you have solved that, then like others say, the more options the better, but mainly all drivers at the same time, and/or start like 30 seconds - 1 minute in between.
Btw make all tracks available for the multiplayer mode, not only some arcade rounds...
Greets,
Tony

Since it is a rally game after all, why not have rallies ? A rally could be open for, say, a week, during which time you could complete each stage individually at a time suitable for you. At the end of the week, the points are distributed appropriately.
Using a dedicated server like the EA Sports model, it would be possible for you to amass points and rise through divisions, join a club for club competitions, earn virtual money, etc, etc. It should also be possible to have "friendly" rallies, etc.
I don't see any need for head to head racing in a rally game, any more than I want a time trial mode for Nascar 2003 ! |

I think ghost for rally stages, but collision for tracks built specially for multiplayer. Turn based for multiplayer on a single computer.

Make the sim only work with certain connections not mixing with others.
example Broadband only work with other broadband connections unless the host decides other wise. Some 56k connections out there are faster than others. So have a utility to keep the slower connectinos off.
not to be mean but i just hate racing against people that who's cars look like they are popping in and out of our space time continuum
