I've just recently finished this model of a Ducati 916, finally after a couple of years modelling it on and off. It's kind of a hybrid, with some 996 thrown in as well! It took me bloody ages to get the render to do justice to all the time and effort I put into it...

is this a cad systems model or a imported photograph of a plastic model you built? how do you know it is accurate?
if cad, what kind ? are all the parts modeled or just the visible surfaces ?
no offense intended by my questions just
very curious, thank you.

I scanned in diagrams of the bike from a model kit, so I know it's pretty accurate. The only thing that I didn't model was the engine that you can't see from the outside, so it's fairly complete.
What's a cad systems model? I did the whole thing in Lightwave, it's the only 3D app I've ever really used
Thanks for the comments!

whats a cad systems model? it is what engineers and architects use to design and build stuff- almost everything made nowadays is done on cad using mathematical principals. cad allows you to make as a model in software ( cyberspace) to ensure everything fits together as it is supposed to. you can then test structural strengths and various dynamics that you want. ever hear of autocad ? it is one of many different types that is out there.

Yes... Computer Aided Design. However in the end adjustments have to be made on the prototype manually because diffrent parts NEVER fit perfectly

it depends on what your tolerance is... if you are willing to accept 0.005 mm /0.0002 in. ( two- ten thousandths of an inch ) as being close enough; most of the problems with assemblies lie in part due to different materials and manufacturing processes being used; and with mass production the allowable tolerences add up too.
At least North American automotive...

What I meant to say is that I disagree with people who treat every aspect of the world (including construction) purely theoretical. Let`s take cars for example. You cannot expect a car that is designed on a computer, tested on a computer and made by computers (industrial robots) to work well from the start. It is necessary to make tests, adjustments, even to redesign certain elements before it all works well. Let`s take european company FIAT for example. They make so called F.I.R.E. engines (humans just control the production process and move them to the storage ) which are great. BUT 10 years ago FIAT made a car called Tipo. It`s floor pan was used in other FIAT`s (including Coupe Turbo ), Alfa Romeo`s and Lancia`s. The floor pan and suspension design were great. Of course the suspension had to be fine tuned by guys from Alfa Romeo but overall it worked great. A big success. BUT in all of those cars that used Tipo floor pan a problem existed. Front wishbones had to be replaced every 50.000 kilometers. Why? A design flaw, pretty obvious but so big that during 10 years of production it hasn`t been solved. And what about Volkswagen engines freezing? Trouble with ECU`s of almost all modern cars? What about Firestones used on Ford Explorers? Not enough testing... Computers make many things faster and cheaper. But I think that human supervision will always be necessary.

Wow, getting technical here! I was aware that CAD was Computer Aided Design, I've just never heard the term 'cad systems model' before... It's quite obvious now, though
I am an artist at heart, so I'm not too fussed about super accuracy, I just want to make stuff look good! As for the materials, Jure, could you suggest which ones could be improved (and how )? I am hoping to work in the games industry, so it would be good to learn how I can improve.
Thanks!
