My old mother board was AGP for the video card and I was running a Geforce 7800GS. I decided it was time to upgrade.
After buying the parts:
Intel DG965WH motherboard
Antec Earthwatts 500 watt power supply
Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 2.4 Ghz processor
4 Gig Crucial DDR2 ram
(I used my old case "X-Infinity" and hard drive "Seagate Barracuda V10")
I didn't have enough funds to buy the video card I wanted (Geforce 8800 GTS). I decided to get a cheap video card until I have the funds to upgrade. I bought the Sapphire Radeon 2600XT w/256 Meg of ram from Amazon for $99. It performs much better than I expected.
It runs all my racing games (NR2003, Rfactor, GTR2) at max detail 1680 x 1050 on my 22" widescreen without a stutter. It runs all my other games great also (Half-Life2, Doom3, Call of Duty2, Quake4).
This card does not require a power dongle and has a minimum power supply recommendation of 400 watts.
I posted this in case anyone is running an older card/has no power supply dongle and wants an inexpensive upgrade with decent performance.
Warning: I have only tried the latest Catalyst 7.10 drivers and it has bad flashing in Nascar Heat and all mods for Heat making it unplayable. |
