NHRA 2003 Development News [18-11-2003 | JZ | Comments (0) ]
Tom Spilman, an ex-Moto1 employee posted this on Nitrosim forum: "I've been meaning to post something to you fans, so i guess this is as good a time as any. I'm not involved with NHRA 3 development now, but i'll tell you what i know from my time at Moto1 and stuff i've heard from Ex-eMotorsports people since. In random order...
eMotorsports may exist in name ( and website ), but all the developers were let go a few months ago. The game was still not done at that time, but it was getting close. It didn't have an applet when I last worked on it. It was all within the game. Alot of graphical features and details added at Moto1 were cut, but graphics in the final version are still much better than before. The single player gameplay was stripped to more or less NHRA1 levels... race, race, race, goto next track, repeat.... there were no videos or any kinda eye candy for wining a race or finishing a season. IMO the single player game was shaping up to be very poor by today's standards.
IMO one very unique and cool thing of NHRA1 and 2 were the driver videos... those are gone. We could have easily taken one weekend and gone and filmed all new ones, but Moto1 wouldn't spend the cash to do it. I made it a point to keep the car paints very mod-able. It was very similar to what i did for NHRA2 and ME, but i'm not sure if it has been changed since. Technically you could create your own tracks and new car models for the game using 3DSMax or Maya (we used Maya). The plan was to release the tools so that people could easily add and modify tracks and cars, but i don't know if they will release them now.
In general myself and may others on the old team were very disappointed in the decisions made and what NHRA 2003 became because of them. When i joined Moto1 i was given the choice on what project to work and to the dismay of the guy hiring me i wanted to work on NHRA 2. I didn't know anything about drag racing other than watching one event and playing NHRA1, but i knew that it had the potential to be a NASCAR quality title that was refreshingly unique. I truly believe that drag racing is such a dramatic, simple, and elegant sport that could be captured like no other in video game form. It's a shame we didn't do better. Let's wait and see how much was improved since Moto1."
