Title: Group C Sportscar Challenge

Released: July 7, 2005

Simulated Series: IMSA GTP
Official Website
Development Status:

Description: That mod is about the most awesome sportscars ever: GTP/GroupC sportscar prototypes from the turbo era in the second half of the 80's. These cars were unbelievably fast groundeffect cars (370-400 kph topspeed at LeMans straight), able to go extremly high cornering speeds.

Group C/GTP cars were dominating most sportscar racing series and have been the most powerful cars apart from F1 in 1982-1990. On the climax of success, in 1987-1990, Group C and GTP races were highly competitive events, fought out by many different manufactorer's cars.

Though Porsche was dominating almost every series up to 1987, Jaguar became more and more successful and finally won Lemans 88, which Sauber was able to do in 89. Nissan's main battlefield was US IMSA series, where their '86 developed car was dominating throughout the 88 season against the Porsches and Jaguars. The Lancias had been the only sportscars that had been able to successfully fight the Porsches until 1985. After Lancia's withdrawal only customer teams were running the Lancia LC2 up to 1990. Lola and March were only producing customer cars and were well known both on european and US racing circuits. Both brand's cars were running in several other manufactorer's liveries such as BMW, Chevrolet, Nissan too. The Corvette GTP (sucessfully run in IMSA from 85-88) for example was build on base of a Lola. Toyota had been participating on Lemans races and Japanese Sportscar series with variably success starting in 1985. The beautiful Toyota 88C was their first really competivite car, starting point to a very successful line of development which ended in domitation of the IMSA series in 1990. Ford's Probe GTP experiment was developed by Zakspeed and run in IMSA series from 1984-1989. Ford stopped their engagement in 1986 because of too little success, but like the Lancia LC2, the Ford Probe GTP was still run by customer teams in the following years.

Many track records are still held by GTP cars, Nordschleife among them.

The mod was planned to be a conversion of SCGT cars, but has turned into a 80% remodeling job. Most of the cars even have to be build from scratch; there are no converted car paints either. All made from scratch.

- The mod features 9 GTP/Group C car types that all have been run for at least 2 years in the second half on the 80's
- A total of 29 car paints from IMSA and Group C World Championship races in 1988 comes with the mod Additional 3rd party car paints are available on the download page
- All car types have individual physics, engine sounds and cockpits

1988/89 all of the most popular and famous cars of Group C/GTP were competing against each other. Porsches still were very competitive, but Jaguars and Nissans were champions, with Sauber C9s advancing to the top.

Group C tech specs:

at least 850kg
either 4-8cyl turbo or 8-12 cyl natural aspirated engines
700-800 hp
4700-4800 mm length
1800-2000 mm width
1000-1100 mm height
2650-2750 mm wheelbase

The era of these cars was ended by FIA when Group C races began to attract more manufactorers and spectators than F1. A change of rule led to development of some of the strangest alien-like racecars ever in 91/92 and to the definite end of Group C/GTP in 1992.
