Grand Prix Simulator Details [11-07-2003 | JZ | Comments (2) ]
Grand Prix Simulator (known as Virtual Grand Prix 2 on Mac) is a work of Paolo Cattani (main programmer) who is working with Alassoft (simulators of mechanical components for the automotive industry) to produce a Formula 1 simulator. Or, in Paolo's own words, "a realistic one-seater of 600KG of weight, over 850HP of power and lots of grip and downforce". Paolo is a fan of the Papyrus sims, but states that "there is no F1 simulator at the moment". The producers/publishers are likely to be Milestone and Lago, who have a history of promoting racing games and flight sims. History? Originally a project to produce the first Amiga F1 sim since Geoff Crammond's famous Microprose Grand Prix, a demo appeared on the Amiga scene around 1998 called AlienF1. Graphics were stunning for the hardware requirements, with texture-mapped 3d at 20fps on 25MHz CPU with 4MB RAM and 2MB (non-3D) graphics chip. With so little processing power to spare, the physics remained uncompromised... AlienF1 was turned into a full game, called Virtual Grand Prix, and won 4th place for AmigaFlame Game of the Year 1999. At time of writing, the Mac beta demo is at version 1.4, and runs with good frame rate on 400MHz, 64MB, Ati Radeon 8500. The demo supports Force Feedback, reported to work with a PS2 wheel.

Grand Prix Simulator - Build, Tune, Drive [07-07-2003 | JZ | Comments (0) ]
Varese 7th July, 2003, Lago, the Italian publisher renowned for its flight simulator add-ons and part of the Leader Group SpA, today announced Grand Prix Simulator, a new PC simulation dedicated to Formula 1 racing enthusiasts. The game, developed by Alassoft, and produced by Italian developer Milestone, makers of Screamer saga (Virgin), Superbikes (EA) and recently Racing Evoluzione (Atari) pushes the boundaries for racing simulation games. Grand Prix Simulator offers a complete Formula 1 championship with the added bonus of an easy-to-use but sophisticated editing suite allowing players to create their own cars and tracks. Drawing on the commercial experience of Alassoft, a team specialising in industrial development of computer simulations of real mechanics models applied to races and cars, the game will reproduce the best car physics to date. To ensure accuracy, Alassoft has hired a professional test driver to check the physics are as close to "real life" as possible. Grand Prix Simulator will offer race fans the most realistic tuning simulator and most powerful construction kit: choose a track (or create one of your own), test your car then tune it, all changes made can be tested immediately using real time telemetry. Drive against computer opponents or take pole position on the net, the Online Multiplayer option allows players to challenge up to x other potential champions. Lago will also launch a website for the Grand Prix Simulator community, with an area for racing fans to test their car's configuration, create their own tracks and exchange tracks and cars with other players. "Lago is established in the flight simulation market, but recently we decided to use our know-how and our expertise to expand our range of products. We believe that Grand Prix Simulator will prove popular with both Formula 1 and racing game fans, " said Luisa Bixio, CEO of Lago. Antonio Farina, CEO of Milestone, added, "We are excited to be joining forces with Lago and Alasoft, between us, our experience, commitment and passion for games will make ensure that Grand Prix Simulator lives up to our high expectations."Grand Prix Simulator will be available for PC in Autumn 2003.
