GTR Preview

The kerbs are not the only thing that is well modelled on the Spa track. The whole track seems very accurate and is certainly an improvement to what we've seen in previous ISI sims. The roller coaster style straights are gone. That doesn't mean that the track is smooth; there are a lot of bumps and like said especially under braking in some places you need to be careful not to lock up going over small bumps. Spa looks like it's still work in progress, because it looks quite empty with trackside objects missing. It still looks beautiful enough, and especially the textures look sharper compared to the washed out look in GTR2002 or F1C. The graphics otherwise are also more than good enough. The car models look great, the textures are nice and the cockpit is nicely done with the Motec display being a cool feature. You can use it to check your tyre and brake temps along with your lap info. I'm not a big graphics geek, but I think it's safe to say that everything in this department is in order. Regarding the cockpit, another nice feature is that you can move the cockpit view forward/backward and up/down with your left and right mouse buttons.

Going back to the driving side of things, there are a couple of things that bother me. One is the rear end of the car coming around without any warning at all when accelerating at low speeds. The car just seems to snap into a spin really suddenly and there isn't anything you can do about it. It's also pretty hard to feel the grip on the rear tyres under acceleration. One thing that contributes to this is that you don't really hear the squeal of the tyres like you do in Papyrus' NASCAR Racing 2003 Season for example. It's not too bad once you get used to it, but it might be a good idea to make the tyre and road sound volume level an option to tweak in the sound menu. The laptimes at Spa also seem to be too fast compared to what the real drivers achieve. I'm not sure why this is, because, like said, the track layout seems to be accurate enough. Eau Rouge seems to be a bit too easy, because you can take it flat out at least with a qualifying setup. Maybe there is too much grip at high speeds, but the fast laptimes are always a combination of many things. Other than these issues I haven't found anything major to complain about. The feeling of driving a racing car might be the best ever, certainly up there with the Papyrus Trans Am physics for N2003. This I feel is because of a combination of a few things. The sense of speed, the sounds, and the G-force effects. What I like most is the way you need to drive the car to achieve fast laptimes. You can't trash and slide the car around the track if you want to find the last second or the last tenths. You need to be aggressive, but still very smooth with your steering and pedal inputs. Drifting or sliding the car is possible, and it's a great feeling to do it in the fast corners, controlling the car with the throttle but the fastest way around the track is to keep it "tidy", like a certain Scottish F1 driver might say. In this way I find GTR more realistic than N2003 PTA, although it's of course hard to compare these two types of cars.

Overall, this press demo is very promising and it will be interesting to see what things will be added and changed for the final version. There are still some things that need to be improved to reach the level of the Papyrus sims. For example the replays in this demo look a little better than in F1C, but you still can't see the car suspension and other things working as well as you can see in Papyrus' NASCAR sims or GPL. Crashes still look very weird in the replays and if you flip the car it doesn't look natural at all. These are maybe small details compared to getting the online experience right. This I feel is the thing that will make or break the game. The rest of the game and certainly the physics engine is competing hard with Papy's best efforts, but if the multiplayer isn't close to the level Papy has set, then I think GTR will never be the number one sim for the serious sim racers. At the moment things look very promising, and I'm more into doing laps at Spa in GTR than playing N2003. I'm very anxious to see how things progress and can't wait for the full version of the game.

If you enter your player config file you will find oddles of options, such as a sound multiplayer for things like "tire scrubbing" which can dramatically improve the driver's ability to determine what the machine is doing.

Having played the other ISI engined games, to see someone compliment the force feedback after playing Papyrus' games... Is this some kind of joke? The FF in ISI games is total ARSE! I would love a decent sportscar sim. Too bad this isn't it. It will no doubt come crippled with the same shortcomings as every ISI title, which they knew about and never fixed. (Crap AI for example) Note to developers: Quit being asshats and put a save option during the race. If Crammond could manage it with the original F1GP on the Amiga, and every version since, I'm damn sure you can.

Great review. I've got 99.99% of the press-demo downloaded. (Damn slow south african internet) Got a racing lan going this weekend, but I think this demo is gonna be played to death.

Wow, this demo makes my EA F1 Challenge so boring to drive now. The best racing sim demo I ever played in my life. If the AI and online part are going to work fine in the final game, this game will go KING OF SIM :-). BRAVO SIMBIN.

it's "curb" not "kerb." This demo rocks. G-forces make it very realistic, and the sounds are insane. Don't know too much about what the real track looks like, but the car handling is rad, as is the bouncing / skidding when you break a bit too much. (Similar to when I hit a sharp turn with my Golf.. ;)

I think the cars were a little too easy to loose control of without warning like you said. Looking at it closer I think they have done a good job of modeling torque, because I have been in a real car with 300+ HP and hit the gas to hard and had the back end start to come around. My only complaint is the curb noise sounds like someone is just thumping on a keyboard. That being said this looks to be a fantastic racing game. Bring on the Lambos and the Porsches.

Just downloaded demo and got it working right. Couldnt go over 40mph in any gear until I pressed the ( L ) key which turned off the rev limiter.....WOW.....I can almost smell the fumes....awesome........its a must have when it comes out. Now that NR2003 is having problems.

I just downloaded GTR and played around a bit. I have a Logitech Momo Force. My only negative comment would be the car wants to veer heavily if the wheel is slightly off center. It seems unnatural. I'm continually fighting the wheel to keep straight. Otherwise everything's about perfect. You can feel the car slide through turns ,Awesome! Please just fix the force feedback stuff and it'll be perfect.

This sim is going to be amazing. This is a press demo, so I'm sure alot that's been mentioned will change. This isn't even the public demo, which should be better. They do need some type of tire skid noise, preferrably complex, so we know what is happening with the car. I can feel it, but it is reasurring to hear the tires also.

Absolutely awesome sim! Great physics and feel. If you want to find out how good it really is, take the inner access road (behind the pits of off the straight after eau rouge) and explore. When you get a wheel off the tarmac, you may get stuck. Watch how well the traction for each individual wheel is modelled. How the bodywork gets hungup on the bumps. Plus great sound and incar environment. the best I've seen yet!

KT, go to Controller, then Force and check "Reverse Effects". That kind of reverses the steering effects. so that they feel natural.

This Game is so good. I have plaayed every driving game under the sun and for once someone has actualy made an effort to make the car sound right. Realisim is amazing for which nouthing comes close with amazing handeling and physics this game will rule the sim world. You cant compare this to Nascar as this is a Real racing sim in which you dont just drive around in a big circle, this game requires skill in the setup of your car to go round fast and tight corners. Please please dont cut any corners and release the game when it is ready with the Ai it deserves. If they allow for downloadable car updates and the ability to incorporate your own skins and mods or just add in a load of the old Le Mans group B cars like the 917s, GT40s, Lola T70s and alike then this will be the greatest game ever. Please include the Le Mans Track old(without the chicane in the Mulsane) and New. What a game

I have the ps2 GT wheel and it works with the PC by USB. Does anyone else have weird force feedback on this demo, for example you can't keep the wheel in the middle because the force feeback forces you left or right?

Wow!! That is the 2nd best car game I've ever played!!! (1rst is Live 4 Speed). For those who said FF is unnatural and cant keep the steering wheel straight, its is because YOU HAVE TO CHECK "INVERT EFECTS" OPTION in the controller set-up screen!!! Also I recomend you to set to 0% the speed steering reduction.

?? I think the FF is fantastic. The best I've seen yet. I own a '00 C5, and my brother has an '01 996 Turbo and had a '94 Viper RT/10. This is the best "feeling" sim out there yet. I don't think the bounce effects are exaggerated AT ALL. I've done 165 many times, and bumps are VERY noticeable. As far as the back end swapping- with Active Handling off, the Vette and Viper are very sensitive. The Porsche is more stable, but the suspension is no where near as stiff as a GT car, so it fits well. Simbin has done a remarkable job. Kerb? Maybe that's a british thing...
