So you want you want to change the car paint jobs in NASCAR Heat? Its not that hard at all really, but you must first know that NH using two types of car textures depending on if your video card can support it. These car textures are listed at 256x256 and 512x512.
Known cards that supports 256 textures:
- 3DFX Voodoo1
- 3DFX Voodoo2
- 3DFX Voodoo3
Known cards that supports 512 textures:
- 3DFX Voodoo5
- nVIDIA TNT
- nVIDIA TNT2
- GeForce
- GeForce 2
Lets begin shall we?
- You downloaded a car that is done in either 256x256 or 512x512 in TGA FORMAT.
- You will need to get a utility named RESTOOLS that was developed by Kevin Combs.
- After extracting Restools to a directory of your choosing, go to your NASCAR Heat installation directory and look for the DATA folder. If you have installed the game elsewhere, you will have to go to that directory and again you are looking for the DATA directory.
- Now then, look for paint.res and paint256.res (Paint.res is for 512x512 and paint256.res is 256x256).
- Make a BACKUP of the res file you plan to use! Copy the res you plan to use to your Restools folder.
- Open up a MS-DOS window and move to your Restools folder/directory. (By default, you will be in the Windows directory so, you need to execute the following commands: cd.. and then cd restools or whatever directory you put the utility.
- Now type rescrack and the name of the res file being used. (paint.res or paint256.res). You will the res file expand.
- Extract your downloaded car into the directory.
- Now we need to convert that TGA format to TEX format. But before doing so, you need to find or decide which cars paint job you want to replace. You will notice that the TEX files have numbers that denote the cars number. So if you see the car31.tex that would be Mike Skinners car and lets use this as an example. Time to convert. Type mktex filename.tga newcar31.tex
- Now you need to delete the old car31.tex file (You did back up the res file, right?).
- Rename the newcar31.tex to car31.tex with this command, ren newcar31.tex car31.tex
- Next, you need to compile a new res file by typing mkres newpaint.res @reslist.txt. You will now see a newpaint.res file created.
- Go to your DATA directory and look for the res file you modified and delete it and copy/move the new res file created and rename to the one you just deleted.
- Launch the game and you will see the changes done!
NOTE: You might notice that there are no headlights, grill, etc since there was no template used or if the creator of the paintjob didnt put them in. IF thats a problem, you can paint all those missing items or look for another paintjob.
